We were so excited to get our hands on Lauren Groff's latest novel, and Matrix doesn't dissapoint. This is a reimagining of the life of Marie de France, a 12th century nun, but it is so much more than just historical fiction. Groff's characters are undeniable and visceral. Rather than centuries away, you will feel like they are in the room with you, like you can hear and smell them through the page. And it's these characters, and protagonist Marie in particular, that make this novel a masterpiece; a character study of a complicated, powerful woman, perfectly captured through a mix of period-specific details and transhistoric qualities. You can't read this book without coming to recognize, know, and love Marie.
